This version became a shift for and was released until July 2001. Subsequently, a replacement 750i E38 was released.
The BMW 750 E38 was equipped with all the amenities and quality features, the cost of the car began with 148,000 brands. A total of 8559 units of the 750s were produced. Unlike the 750i, the elongated 750iL version with an increased wheelbase of 14 centimeters became especially popular. This comfortable version has been available since October 1994 and was discontinued in 2001 with a total number of cars produced — 16,658, which is half the amount of 750i.
A replacement for the 750 iL has become. Based on the 750iL, a luxurious version was created.
With updates in the model range in 1997, the 750i was supplied as standard with the third generation DSC III Stability Control, in addition to the ASC + T, a function that controls vehicle lateral stability.
As standard, the BMW 750i was equipped with automatic climate control with separate temperature control for the driver and front passenger, a micro-filter with activated carbon and automatic air recirculation (AAR), a 95-liter fuel tank, Servotronic, alloy wheels, an on-board computer, a remote control and alarm.
The standard interior elements for the 750th were a full leather interior, heated seats front and rear, programmable auxiliary ventilation, reading lamps for rear passengers, wooden trim with cupholders front and rear, an electric rear curtain drive and an on-board computer.
On the BMW 750i E38 was installed, which develops a maximum power of 326 hp. This power unit has an outstanding power potential and almost no vibration. It is based on a 5.4-liter aluminum block and advanced Bosch Motronic electronics (even the boot process is automatically controlled). In addition, the acoustics of the engine have been improved on this motor and fuel consumption has been reduced.
The BMW 750 E38 was equipped exclusively with a 5-speed automatic transmission (Steptronic gearbox type has been available since 1996).
The extended version of the BMW 750iL E38 became even more attractive for many BMW fans after it became the main car in the action-packed crime drama Boomer, directed by Peter Buslov.
Also with the 750iL E38 in real life is the tragic story of the famous rap artist 2Pac (Tupac Shakur). The rapper was killed in this modification of the E38 in black.
This model of the American specification was released in October 1995, equipped with an M73 engine and an automatic.
As for the future history of the car, according to some reports, it is known that the car at the time of the murder was on loan and belonged to the Executive Car Leasing company registered in Los Angeles. Subsequently, the car was confiscated and sold to a private buyer.
As a rational decision, weighing strengths and weaknesses and focus on typical breakdowns is an ungrateful task. That’s because this car is not chosen by reason — by heart.
The last «real» Bavarian flagship, a childhood dream, a James Bond car and a gang from Boomer … Too many associations.
Until recently, the E38 seemed an unattainable car for celestials, and today — it can be bought already for 4-6 thousand cu at the rate. And often it’s hard to refuse such a purchase, even if it is frankly “killed”. This is because it is the only «seven» that is chosen for soulfulness. And having chosen, they sit down on E38 as heroin, unable to part even with a ushatny 20-year-old specimen.
And in search of the E38 they’re not sent because they need a “Bavarian premium” — BMW fives of those years are enough for this. They search for the E38 when they need the E38. No more, no less.
The third generation of the «seven» appeared in 1994. A strict laconic and at the same time original and dynamic design was created by a team led by Chris Bangle. Until now, connoisseurs of the Bavarian brand have called E38 the most beautiful of the «sevens» BMW.
BMW E38 was available in three body styles — a standard sedan, an elongated Long version (+140 mm wheelbase), an extended L7 limo (+394 mm).
For the sedan relied on a wide range of engine options: in-line «six», several V8 and the flagship V12 — in total, six versions of gasoline and three diesel engines. In terms of boxes, the buyer chose from 5 speed and 6 speed manual gearboxes and a 5-speed automatic gearbox. The place of the M-version was occupied by the exclusive Alpina B12, charged at 386-428 hp.
Equipped the flagship and a first-class innovative «stuffing», for example, a dynamic stabilization system and adaptive automatic transmission. Recall that the E38 was produced from 1994 to 2001 — for those times it was a technological revolution.
Why is the E38 still considered for purchase?
Before the E38 was removed from the assembly line, its sales went up sharply. This is a rare story that can be explained very simply: when they saw Chris Bangle’s new creation in 2002, connoisseurs of Bavarian classics rushed to the dealerships to buy the last real flagship with a bright cinema career.
The new “seven” E65 drew the line “before” and “after” in the change of BMW eras: after the departure of the E38, experiments with design, downsizing of engines and other sad innovations began. And the E38 has become a permanent symbol of the era of the 90s. And, I must say, the appearance and filling of the machine perfectly reflected the values \u200b\u200band lifestyle of the characters for whom it was intended in the cinema: adrenaline, non-conformism, the desire to take everything from life. And more.
Today, for those who want to get this F-class model for personal, undivided use, the issues of maintenance costs, breakdowns and diseases of motors are not relevant at all. This immortalized in BMW films, even taking into account respectable age, remains in demand among fans of the brand so far, and the authority of the 90s is still in the flow of E38. And this is not philistinism, it is a matter of the image of the owner.
Probably, therefore, in those sales advertisements that indicate the maximum cost of a used E38 (12 thousand cu according to our data), there is a notation “car for a connoisseur”.
Premium premium, which is fused with traditional Bavarian values, dynamics and controllability — this is the recipe for E38 success.
The two-ton “lighter” will not allow saving and observing traffic rules: pleasant steering heaviness, tenacious brakes, balanced steering and anti-slip systems plus an engine compartment V8 and especially V12 — and that’s all, the owner is gone.
The leg presses on the accelerator against the will, the uterine growl from the engine compartment spurs excitement … This huge, low and rear-wheel drive beast will not let you behave calmly and balanced. Only hardcore.
Now you will find such a character unless in separate «charged» emkas, but connoisseurs are categorical: not that. They do not have what was in E38. The name for this is the breed.
Luxury and comfort
The era of the E38 — the time of the Cold War between BMW and Daimler, and therefore the «seven» could not give way to the W140. Could not and did not have time: the richest options and a cozy lounge are proof of this.
The suspension obediently swallows the bumps in the road, the chair hugs the body and remembers the individual settings, double-glazed windows are responsible for first-class sound insulation.
All kinds of heating and massage as an option for seats, navigation and separate climate control, webasto, separate rear seats, cell phone and even TV — the list of equipment is huge. For the first time, safety blinds appeared on the E38, which protect the heads of people in the cabin with a side impact.
A standard refrigerator and a subwoofer for emergency music were put in a 500-liter trunk.
The external equipment of the cabin also makes an impression. It makes no sense to take this «seven» in the minimum configuration. To feel this car — only luxurious classics, black genuine leather and walnut root in the finish.
You get used to the good, and therefore it is so difficult for the owners to part with their E38. Often you can hear the opinion that this is the last «seven» BMW, where «show-offs were worth their money.» And that after the E38 the rest of the 7-series could surpass it in appearance, drive or equipment, but never — in a combination of these three elements.
E38 does not have global problems with electrics, motors or suspension, if we compare it with other representatives of the business class of that era.
Another question is that the age of the car simply obliges it to have problems with the body — and on many copies that are sold on the secondary market of Belarus, the doors are changed, the thresholds are overcooked, the elements are repainted in order to hide corrosion.
Suspension service — the front MacPherson and the rear multi-link — also does not cause any problems if the owner takes the E38 to the service at least once every six months, and does not reveal problems due to extraneous knocks.
As for the chassis, instead of the steering rack in the E38 is a simple steering gear with an electronic Servotronic amplifier.
In addition to the “servotronic”, the E38 also has other electronic assistants, including a full-fledged stabilization system, adaptive shock absorbers and a body level adjustment system (optional). The question is, how does all this splendor work when driving a 20-year-old car. The question is on the conscience of previous owners.
If the E38 is on the go and carefully maintained, there will be no global problems (except for the condition of the body). The motors that went to this «seven» are reliable enough, electronics are not capricious.
A long simple “seven”, like any car, will not do good. Like the collective farm “tuning”, servicing with dubious spare parts by garage craftsmen and ignoring problems. But in general, E38 is a reliable and resourceful unit.
It is worth looking at a couple of dozens of ads for the sale of used E38, as the reasons for not buying it become obvious. More precisely, this is one reason that explains the essence of the problem.
Good E38 can not be found, bad — can not be restored
Owners of BMW E38 are conditionally divided into two categories.
The first is fans of the brand, who understand the value of this machine and invest crazy amounts in it every year.
These eliminate malfunctions and “collective farming” of the previous owners, service and repair the E38 at the official dealership with exclusively original spare parts, order deteyling, long and painfully choose the style of the wheels, and if necessary, paint the element to clean it to metal and even order factory options.
And such an owner, of course, for 6-8 thousand cu his beloved “seven”, in which so much is invested, will not give up. Rather, put up an ad, begin to look for something similar (but there are no analogues) and, disappointed, put the E38 in the garage — to ride on weekends.
But there are 5-10 percent of such announcements.
And the rest fit under the soft «killed collective farm.» With associated space costs of the new owner.
Moreover, in this case, the search for problems will not cost checking the configuration with the VIN number, checking the traces of welding spars or dancing with a thickness gauge.
Forums and specialized resources are full of information about what can be «optimized» by craftsmen in E38. Including understatement clearance, chip tuning, direct exhaust installation. This list of «collective farms» is worth exploring — and many potential owners refuse to buy at this stage.
- The low price of E38 in combination with the phrases “no time to deal with”, “a lot of things changed” with a scrupulous listing and obvious “tuning”, “nuances of automatic transmission” is the best reason to refuse to buy.
- In addition, the image of the “dashing guy” is not reflected in the best way on E38. A lot of cars (broken) in front, which were rolled over onto the roof, were rebuilt after a fire.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the difficulties with finding qualified craftsmen. The machine is complex, specific, requires separate knowledge and skills. What service could the E38 have from district centers and remote village towns?
In general, the E38 loves premium care, good roads and warm garages. Without this, it’s not at all the “seven” that is about a dream. And just a “ushatanny” copy and the path to the debt hole, if thousands of dollars for restoration are not laid down in the purchase budget initially.
For those who still firmly decided to look for a worthy instance. Problems regarding the power plant, transmission, suspension and electrics of the BMW E38.
Body and interior
The manufacturer did not spare paint and steel for the «seven», but taking into account the mileage it is difficult to find a copy with «native» thresholds, doors, arches.
- More often rotting sills are hidden by a dense layer of putty, especially in pre-styling versions, without plastic overlays on the sills.
- The door edges, the boot lid under the emblem, door arches and the places on the bottom where the factory anticorrosive material fell out are the main problem areas that should be checked especially carefully.
You should not buy statements about the «original frontal» production, for example, Pilkington. This does not mean that the car was not in an accident. Smart outbids have not put a crystal clear Chinese counterpart in a long time, but they are not buying new glass with the necessary markings on auto-disassemblies.
The optics become cloudy over time from scratches, and headlight glasses will cost a lot.
In terms of electrical equipment, the catch is to be expected from various control units, including the main one, climate control ECU, on-board control unit, ABS system, and Servotronic electronic steering system.
- Engine sensors fail, which causes problems with the operation of the motor.
- The problem of broken pixels in the dashboard will be solved only by replacing the display of the on-board computer.
In general, the motors on the E38 are reliable. The most successful are gasoline V8s with a volume of 3 to 4.4 liters, as well as engines of the M60, M62, M52 series.
Petrol engines on this «seven» go 400-700 thousand km to overhaul, their main enemy is overheating. And also a water hammer, and the motor can “slurp” water even when driving through a deep puddle due to the low located air intake.
On the M52 and M60 series, the nickel coating on the cylinders and the expensive VANOS are scolded. Plus a small resource of sensors, including a lambda probe, and ignition modules. Plus fuel appetite growing with the number of cylinders.
- The base gasoline “six” M52 scolded for lack of power: 192 hp not enough for two tons of metal, you have to twist. Such were installed on the 728i.
- V-shaped three-liter gasoline M60, which were placed on dorestaylingnye 730i, are considered dynamic and reliable.
- The 3.5-liter M62, which replaced the M60 in 1996 and were installed on the 735i, and the 4.0-liter after restyling and the 4.4-liter M64 (for the 740i) are also reliable enough, but the complex VANOS phase rotation system is already causing problems the first hundred thousand kilometers, and its replacement hits the wallet.
- Flagship V12 at 326 hp and 5.4 liters of volume, which was installed on the 750i, this is the M engine. The never-economical «beast» will not forgive neglect, only experts should service it.
Diesel versions meet infrequently, and E38 — the first «seven» BMW, which generally began to install diesel engines. Buying diesel versions is always a guarantee of high mileage and high fuel system upkeep. The exception is perhaps the popular in the secondary market M57.
- The basic 143-horsepower unit for the 725td, the M51 family, is too weak for a heavy machine, and also suffers from a structurally weak injection pump.
- The most acceptable choice is a 2.9-liter M57. The best in its class, it is quite simply arranged and has 193 hp. Such were placed on the 730d. Expensive breakdowns — replacement of nozzles and flow meter, and also in case the exhaust gases break into the crankcase. Plus a worn out turbine.
- The top diesel V8 of the M67 family, which relied on the hood of the 740d and produced 245 hp. power, it’s better not to buy. This 3.9-liter diesel engine is distinguished by extremely sensitive control electronics and injectors that are incompatible with domestic fuel. And the torque of 590 Nm is poorly digested by the automatic transmission, especially in terms of the dual-mass flywheel. Differential suffers too.
The timing chain for all engines that went to the E38 is considered maintenance free. But in fact, it has to be changed every approximately 300 thousand km.
Basically, car care according to the BMW standard: the best oil and fuel available, a sensitive reaction to noise from under the hood, prevention of overheating. So, no clogged radiators and idle for hours. In general, it depends entirely on the owner whether you get a half-millionth living person or a 200-thousandth person completely killed by the CPG.
Both the manual gearbox (for petrol 2.8 and diesel 2.5) and the automatic gearbox were installed on the E38. If the «mechanics» are considered reliable, there are questions about the «machines».
- Automatic gearboxes manufactured by ZF of the 5HP24 and 5HP19 series are the best choice, but despite the manufacturer’s statements, they still require maintenance: ATF fluid is replaced every 100-120 thousand km.
- «Automata» of American origin, GM, can not stand high speeds (overheat) and dirty oil, their maintenance requires increased attention. And if you sharply turn on R after D, the snap ring will break. The good news is that the GM automatic transmissions were only equipped with individual versions of the inline sixes.
Most levers in the E38 change assembly, some are made of aluminum.
After a complete bulkhead, the front suspension runs 100+ thousand km. The rear multi-link will have to be repaired more often, approximately every 40-60 thousand km: a heavy car. Moreover, the rear suspension is complicated, there are a lot of details, the design of many does not allow the installation of analogues from other BMW models.
The air suspension for the 750i is impeccable in terms of comfort and even lasts longer than the standard, but if it fails, the owner will lay out more than a thousand cu for repairs.
- Original front shock absorbers go up to 300 thousand km.
- Silent blocks change separately from levers on average every 40-60 thousand km.
- Levers live about 60 thousand km, change together with ball bearings.
- Steering rods and tips serve 80 thousand km, steering trapezoid — 40 thousand km.
- The weak point of the structurally complex rear suspension is the silent blocks of the H-shaped lever. They require replacement every 40-60 thousand km, and after 60-90 thousand upper levers also join them.
- The lower swinging levers last the longest, but their turn also comes — at a mileage of 200 — 250 thousand km.
The third generation of the BMW 7-series sedans, which received the E38 index, debuted in June 1994, replacing the previous E32. The design of the new BMW flagship was determined by the previous model: a low hood topped with the branded «nostrils» of the radiator grill, large windows. The workmanship of the bodywork was perfected, and the gaps between the body panels became minimal.
The same quality inside: the interior is made in a typical German strict and restrained style, the center console is slightly deployed to the driver. He sits, as if in the cockpit of a fighter — he is surrounded by devices and buttons to control auxiliary systems. But, unfortunately, there was not much free space for front riders, by the standards of the class.
The main attention was paid to the passengers of the second row — there was so much space that even a tall man could calmly throw his legs upside down.
The comfort of passengers while riding was taken care of by the NR body position control system and the ASC auto body stabilization system. The ECS system electronically controlled the stiffness of the shock absorbers, which, of course, affected comfort for the better. The ventilation and temperature control system made it possible to set a different climate for the driver and passengers of the front and rear seats.
All «sevens» had decent basic equipment, which included power accessories, multifunction steering wheel, audio system, ABS, on-board computer, standard alarm with immobilizer, etc. But one of the most richly equipped was the BMW 750iL. In addition to the above, it was standardly equipped with Park Distance Control system, a 5-speed automatic transmission, self-adjusting suspension, a cell phone with voice dialing, heated front and rear seats, an audio system consisting of 14 speakers, whose power was 440 watts, a navigation system, on-board TV and aluminum rims.
The choice of additional options was limited only by the imagination and material capabilities of the customer. Here are just a few of them:
* Sportpaket M (sports seats and steering wheel, special interior color, birch or walnut inserts, 18 inch alloy wheels), except for 740iL and 750iL;
* A more advanced head unit with the ability to read CD and Hi-Hi system;
* Shadow-Line (lack of outer chrome);
* Chrome-Line Interiur (chrome inserts in the cabin);
* monitor for rear passengers;
* Optional cell phone for the rear row of seats.
There were versions with an elongated base of 140 mm, denoted by the letter L.
But the longest “seven” in the back of the E38 was the L7 model. It was built on the BMW 750i base extended by 390 mm.
The space behind the front seats was completely redesigned: there was a partition separating the driver from the second row of seats, its own audio system, DVD player, and especially valuable wood and high-quality leather were used in the decoration.
Both long-base «sevens» could be produced in lightly armored (class B4) versions, called «Protection». They were equipped with bulletproof glass, parts that enhance the security of the body, and wheels with the ability to go after a puncture or cross.
The range of motors was simply huge: 725tds (very rare and produced only 2 years), 728i, 730d, 730i, 735i, 740d, 740i, 750i. All motors met Euro-3 standards. Even the smallest 3-liter six-cylinder diesel could accelerate to hundreds in 8 seconds, with a top speed of 220 km / h.
What can we say about other more powerful engines, and even more so about the flagship 5.4-liter gasoline V12 with the factory index M73 B54, which has 326 horsepower and accelerates a two-ton sedan to hundreds in 6 seconds. The maximum speed limited by electronics reached 250 km / h.
Motors could be aggregated with a five-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Almost immediately, sales began in the United States. For the Americans, the most powerful «sevens» were offered — 740i and 750i and their long-base versions. They can be distinguished by different optics and the trunk lid.
The main reason for the success of BMW in the body of the E38 was that Bavarian engineers managed the almost impossible — a compromise between handling and comfort.
From year to year, the popularity of the E38 was also supplemented by auxiliary electronic systems, by which it was one step ahead of other competitors. Among the electronic filling — the system of dynamic stabilization of movement (DSC), adaptive automatic transmission (AGS), which allows you to change the gearshift algorithm depending on driving conditions, electronic engine management system ELM.
Another trump card of the car was outstanding safety. The car body had programmable deformation zones. All «sevens» were equipped with several airbags for both front passengers and rear. The new Head Protection System, an inflatable umbrella deployed diagonally from the windshield to the roof above the rear door, protected the heads of passengers in front. The safety of those who were located at the rear was ensured by airbags built into the doors.
Also, the car was equipped with locks that block the doors from opening by children, the Dynamic Stability Control system and built-in sensors that automatically open the doors and turn on emergency lights and lights in the passenger compartment in the event of a serious accident.
In 1995, tuning studio Alpina released the most powerful and technologically advanced «seven» -.
Around the same time, no less eminent ateliers Hamann and Schnitzer offered their “charged” versions of the E38.
In September 1998, the car underwent a slight restyling, during which the front of the car, the interior, changed slightly, a chrome strip appeared above the number on the trunk.
Now you can install Sportpaket M on version 740i. One of the engines, a 4.4-liter V8 M62, underwent easy modernization: new dual-vanos valves appeared. Power and torque have not changed, but their peak began to be achieved at lower speeds.
In 2000, a hydrogen-powered concept car was built on the basis of the BMW 750iL, called the 750hL (CleanEnergy Concept).
The standard V12 engine was redone for a hydrogen ride. The car had a 140 liter tank for hydrogen, refueling at a temperature of -250 ° C, and could pass 400 km without refueling. Acceleration to hundreds took 9.6 seconds, top speed-226 km / h.
During the tests at the Nurembergring, the lap time was 9 minutes 53 seconds. After testing, ten 750hl were sent on a world tour to demonstrate the capabilities of hydrogen aggregates.
The Seven in the back of the E38 was very popular in Europe and even starred in the movies: in one of the parts of Bondiana, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Luc Beson’s cult film Carrier. Residents of Russia remembered the car for the no less cult film «Boomer».
The BMW 7-series E38 was produced until July 2001, when it was replaced by the new seven BMW E65 / 66 model year 2002, marking the arrival of a new era in design. Prices for the most affordable BMW 728i with manual transmission of the last months of production in Germany started from 95,300DM (about 48,000 €).
One of the federal channels still constantly broadcasts films of similar subjects. I will not say which one. I can only say that its name begins with «N» and ends with «TV.» But times are changing — “war chariots” are changing. Take the same «Boomer». A true lifestyle icon and a textbook for young people whose style implies an elegant combination of a tracksuit and classic pointed shoes.
And then it’s time to talk about the “seven” BMW in the back of the E38, which appears throughout the film as the fifth protagonist. They stopped producing this car almost fifteen years ago, but now hardly anyone will say that its design looks outdated. The car is large, impressive, formidable, still making you respect yourself on the road. At least provincial cities. Moreover, those who buy such a car will have the opportunity, and even more than once, to experience an aura of fear experienced by older people on an old Zhiguli car, as a reminder of the times when jeans and chewing gum only gained popularity in Russia. And this means that she is liked mainly by young people under thirty, dressed in tracksuits and continuing to click seeds, even gathering bainki. I’m serious! Take a closer look next time a tinted window opens at the E38 at a traffic light: you will certainly see a young guy shaking the husk on the asphalt.
BMW 7 Series (E38)
However, to hell with sentimentality! The car is truly legendary, stuffed with innovation (by then standards), which was also Frank Frank’s personal transport in the film «Carrier». She really can interest many. In one of the specialized Internet clubs you will find crowds of people who are ready to part with their native granny for organs rather than with their E38.
But is this «seven» so good? And where did the young guys get the executive cars? I’m generally silent about grannies. I’ll try to explain. The car in this body was produced until 2001. That is, any existing instance today is at least 14 years old. And given the cost of maintaining such an artifact, the number of ads for sale on electronic platforms is understandable. To find a fresher, we set the last three years of production in the selection criteria, and a half thousand armada opens for us. Price tags start at 150 thousand rubles. for trash on Latvian numbers and with a dubious history. We bet that under the putty of such a machine there will be a dozen nine-millimeter holes, and under the carpets there will be husk of seeds? The price ceiling rests at 750 thousand for copies in excellent condition with two or three names in the TCP. If only you do not trade in crime, keeping stalls near the house in fear, then I think you will come to a reasonable 450-470 thousand.
BMW 7 Series (E38)
What can you buy for the money? Lada Priora or Largus. And even the Benlada. Moreover, five copies at once, one for each working day.
Well, I do not! A true fan will choose the version of the BMW 750i with a 5.4-liter V12. Judge for yourselves: a solid wheelbase, a leather interior (possibly brought to a subcutaneous state, nevertheless), door closers and a BMW nameplate on the trunk, which, in the end, will push a neighbor to come to you one evening, rely on the M73 motor for salt or matches. But do not rush to run to the seller, waving a passbook. Because then everything will not be as rosy as you might think.
“More powerful” means “better”?
Most often, the 7th series of those years is found with 4.4 and 5.4 liter engines under the hood. Both are good, resourceful, but also demanding on consumables. The base 3.0-liter unit also comes across, but for such a heavy car it is frankly not enough. Of course, the more power in stock, the less the engine tenses, dragging you around the city. Hence the larger resource of the motor is larger. Given the runs for 300-400 thousand km, it would be wise to take a larger engine to insure yourself at least from overhaul during the ownership of a seasoned «seven».
V12 engine under the hood of the BMW 7 Series (E38)
That is why today we are talking about V12. They say that he is a vivid representative of those same «millionaires» about whom legends make up. I must admit that this seems like the truth. In official trials, BMW launched the M73 at the booth. At 16,000 (!) Rpm, he worked continuously for 32 days before he was stopped. And after such critical loads, the motor, as you probably thought, was devouring oil, like Joy Chestnut, the champion of eating hamburgers during his favorite pastime. But no. Having disassembled the unit, the engineers did not find critical defects in the gaps and put it into production.
At the same time — the best and at the same time the worst of all details. Very controversial unit. It’s not even that any engine on the E38 is prone to overheating, which can happen both from a flooded unregulated antifreeze and from a clogged radiator, which usually never gets cleaned over the years. And it’s not even that the optimal period for changing the oil in it is 6 thousand km, while the oil also requires strict adherence to regulations and requirements for quality and viscosity. The real problem of the 750th is the expense. If you put an explosive charge on the gas pedal that is triggered by touching your foot, and wrap the right boot to the seat to protect yourself from the temptation to drown, the flow will still be at least 16 liters per hundred. Well, if you decide to attach a “Bully” to the frontal sticker and turn the engine to the cut-off, then a consumption of 30 liters will make you sob at a gas station.
You can, of course, transfer the car to gas, but modern equipment, coupled with the installation, cost 60–70 thousand rubles, which means that by putting it in, you will eat “doshiraki” and radish for a couple of months and, most likely, you will earn heartburn .
The interior of the BMW 7 Series E38
With the gearbox, too, bad luck came out. No, it’s from Aston Martin here and is pretty good, but it didn’t count on the huge torque (490 Nm) that our V12 gives out. So, if you start to drive aggressively, expect problems. , theoretically, unattended, but if the oil was not changed in it, and the car was already running over 200 thousand km, then every time you switch, a good kick will be waiting for you, so that by the end of the day you will reach the house with back pain. Therefore, when inspecting this machine, pay attention to the behavior of the «machine.» There is reason to doubt the smooth switching — feel free to bargain.
The suspension is good. The front aluminum mnogoryichazhka restrains this two-ton ivory on the road amazingly, but it has one. When one element fails, then soon it pulls along all the neighboring suspension elements to the grave. This is the same as if you were sneezed at, and you, giving up aspirin, went to intensive care a week later. An unpleasant feature. Therefore, get ready for the fact that in case of a small breakdown, while the item ordered in the store is delivered, you will have to walk for a week, holding on to your back, cursing the suspension and wailing that you were beaten by the gearbox.
The interior of a car that was produced 20 years ago looks worthy even today
We consider the costs
The market is full of cars of this kind for several reasons. Firstly, there is no “past generation” of the “seven”. After the release of the new, the rest immediately turn out to be old, hence the loss in price. When a car depreciates twice or more, those who could not afford such a car from scratch lay eyes on it. Then they go to the limit of the entire resource, to major service, after which they try to get rid of the car.
In a word, instead of the new B-class foreign car, you can of course buy a 15-year-old “old woman”, but is it worth it? Replacing 10 liters of oil in a box costs 8,000 rubles. The suspension requires the replacement of consumables, such as silent blocks of the rear levers (two for 1,500 rubles each), bushings of the front stabilizers (two for 600 rubles each), tips of the stabilizers (two each for 800 rubles) every two years even with careful driving. And we are talking about analogues of branded spare parts!
Add here the front (2,600 rubles) and rear (1,500 rubles) pads, which are not easy when the machine weighs two tons, the steering trapezoid (7,000 rubles) is another weak point, as well as the cost of work (about a third of each amount ) Why, there’s a pendant, even twelve iridium candles, there are 600 rubles apiece, and do not forget that this is BMW. So, it doesn’t work out with a “10” key and a hammer to make a complete overhaul of the motor, like on a Zhiguli car. Most of the work will have to be done at the service station.
We are looking for an alternative
You still haven’t changed your mind? Then the only reasonable solution against this background is the purchase of the «seven» in the next body. Remember, this is the ambiguous Chris Bangle had a hand in? The car with it looks more modern, quite brutal, there are pneumatic elements behind it, and this is the best-selling 7th BMW series in its entire existence. You can choose a 4.4 engine, which, although voracious as a sumoist, still does not ruin you for two trips around the city, like a V12 on E38. Having spent the same half a million on the purchase of the 7th series in the E65 body, you will not bother with the push of a button, because there is an iDrive joystick that configures all the systems of the machine. And the neighbor’s salt will end much more regularly.
Generally speaking, what does a person really want when buying such a car? Manageability? Maybe comfort? Hardly. After all, then he would have preferred the more affordable 5th series (for example,). Including in terms of ownership. Then maybe ergonomics? Also unlikely. In this case, why not choose a Ford Focus or any other golf car that matches this criterion?
The thing is still an unfulfilled dream, which, as you know, has no statute of limitations. But only if it was formed by films based on the dashing 90s, then I have shocking news for you. Today, tough guys move mainly on large SUVs.
So there was one reason for the purchase, and it seems to be the most reliable. The reason is in the girl. The very one whose attention you are trying to attract, confess. But is it really necessary to buy a BMW “seven”, a tracksuit and a gold chain? Cheaper and wiser to spend money on a bouquet of flowers and dinner in a restaurant to get it located, right?
If you are simply a connoisseur of the eternal German, then there are several recommendations for you. First, take your time with the choice. This is the very purchase that cannot be made with the heart without connecting the mind. Be careful, be patient and wait for “your” copy. After waiting, do not rush to drive the car for service diagnostics, although this is a mandatory procedure that can save you a lot of nerves and money in the future. First talk with the owner, understand who is in front of you and whether this person could keep such a car in decent condition. A car owner who loves his car will almost always be happy to talk about the problems that comprehended him and the decisions that had to be taken to fix the problems.
Fear the cars whose wheels are shod with winter tires in the summer, as well as those who bought the «German», and then drove for three years and only changed the oil. In fact, this means that all the details that have exhausted the resource will have to be changed. And also avoid people for unknown reasons selling a car after a couple of months of ownership. Be vigilant and pragmatic. And better — buy something simpler and fresher.
The classic silhouette and well-designed interior made the BMW 7 third generation a dream of many motorists. BMW with model code E38 debuted in 1994. Two years later, the engine range was revised, and in 1998, restyling was carried out. A characteristic feature of the updated version is headlights with enlarged round reflectors. In 2001 there was a generational change.
BMW 7 Series E38, in a sense, is a cult car. A significant contribution to this was made by Pierce Brosnan (James Bond, “Tomorrow Never Dies”), Jason Statham (“Carrier”), and of course the Russian film “Boomer”.
The car was offered only in the sedan. A length of 4.98 meters and a wheelbase of 2.93 meters indicate that we are dealing with a representative of the highest class. In the secondary market you can find an elongated version with the letter “L”, which has a length of 5.12 meters and a wheelbase of 3.07 m.
As befits the flagship, complaining about the level of equipment of the BMW e38 is not necessary. Even in the very first copies on board there is a two-zone air conditioning system (though with manual control), a multi-function steering wheel, a front panel decorated with elements of walnut wood, and velor upholstery. Leather trim was on the list of options. In later instances, a dynamic stability control system DSC appeared, a telephone integrated in the center console, navigation with a screen and a TV tuner (standard equipment since 2000). In copies of recent years of production, there is even an active cruise control. Many owners expressed their gratitude to BMW engineers for their excellent ergonomics, great interior design, a large amount of free space and electric seats and a fair amount of adjustments.
Classics and functionality. Burnt pixels on amber displays, cracks in the skin of seats and creaking plastic give out age.
The oldest BMW e38s in the basic equipment had only two airbags (side airbags were available as an option) and the HPS head protection system. In elongated versions, make-up mirrors or additional television screens could be installed in the head restraints. Wooden folding tables could also be mounted in the backs of the front seats. For an extra charge, an optional audio system with 14 speakers, up to 4 subwoofers and a digital sound equalizer were installed in the German sedan.
The car is wide, but sitting in the middle is uncomfortable due to the profile of the sofa and the high tunnel.
At first, the car was offered only with gasoline V8 displacement of 3.0 liters and 4.0 liters. In addition, there was a flagship V12 with a capacity of 5.4 liters and a capacity of 326 hp. In subsequent years, more modest in-line 6-cylinder engines appeared: gasoline 2.8 liters and diesel — 2.5 liters and 2.9 liters. The latter became widely popular in Europe, and the model received the designation 730d. After an update in 1998, the model range was replenished with a diesel engine — V8 with a working volume of 4.0 liters.
What problems do owners of BMW e38 have? First of all, this is overheating of gasoline engines. The cooling system requires constant monitoring of its condition. In addition, the pump often fails. Sometimes there are expensive to eliminate oil leakage from under the oil seals of the crankshaft, cylinder head or oil filter. One of the common ailments of cars with gasoline units is fuel tank corrosion.
For motorists with little money, the BMW e 38 is best suited with the weakest 2.8-liter engine in the lineup. This is the only 6-cylinder engine in the gasoline range. It copes quite well with the weight of a large sedan and is inexpensive to maintain. A much more dynamic 3-liter aspirated. But many copies have exorbitant oil appetite. No less interesting is the 3.5-liter unit. It already allows you to fully experience all the delights of the «sevens.»
The cost of maintaining a BMW e38 is growing in proportion to the power of the power unit. So the 4.4-liter unit is too gluttonous, and the cost of repairing the V12 will be just space. Difficult to find spare parts and no substitutes. And here are two engine control harnesses, two computers and two fuel systems. In fact, V12 are two in-line «sixes», combined into a single whole.
Special care must be taken when choosing a BMW 7 diesel. The base 2.5 TDS for this model is too weak. Not only that, a sedan with such an engine is very sluggish, so the engine still suffers due to numerous defects. The most vulnerable injection pump and cylinder head.
Among diesel engines, the most acceptable choice is a 2.9-liter unit. Once this turbodiesel was considered the best in its class. Unfortunately, after a while it becomes more expensive to operate. Injectors fail (new cost more than 10,000 rubles), pulley, flow meter. Expensive repairs can result in a breakthrough of exhaust gases into the engine crankcase or a worn out turbocharger. Interestingly, due to the fact that the engines are paired with an automatic transmission, a two-mass flywheel does not present any problems for a very long time.
We strongly recommend avoiding the BMW E38 with a top-end diesel V8 displacement of 3.9 liters and twin turbocharging. The engine is considered a real masterpiece of engineering, however, a total of 3,500 such copies were produced. Therefore, it is better not to even mention possible repair costs. It should also be borne in mind that a huge torque of 590 Nm is poorly digested by the automatic transmission and differential. To prolong the life of the machine will allow periodic oil changes.
In accordance with tradition, all BMW e38 engines are equipped with a timing chain that does not require maintenance. The manufacturer recommends only periodically monitor its condition. In reality, the timing drive needs to be updated after 300,000 km.
Common problems and malfunctions
Most instances have numerous problems. Most often from the side of the electrician, who does not tolerate unprofessional interference and economy. Already in 1998, a liquid-cooled generator was included in the standard equipment of cars with V8 and V12 engines. The cost of the new is about 35,000 rubles. In used copies, monitors, indicators, various sensors and additional equipment are often faulty. Comparatively often, the air conditioning control unit fails.
Due to the large number of electrical equipment, the battery has a low life.
BMW E38 suspension for a car of this class is quite cheap to repair. For about 15,000 rubles, you can replace all silent blocks and ball on the same axis. However, versions with active self-leveling hydropneumatic rear axle suspension should be avoided. Restoring only one sphere with nitrogen will require at least 8,000 rubles, and a shock absorber — about 15,000 rubles. The new shock absorber will cost 30,000 rubles.
The suspension is considered hardy. The first problems begin to arise after 150-200 thousand km. There are a lot of quality substitutes on the market.
In pre-styling instances, window frames are often poorly fitted.
During inspection, it is necessary to check the condition of the body. Even cars that never got into an accident (and there are very few of them) can rust. Traces of corrosion must be sought on the boot lid, in the corners of the doors, on the edges of the wings and under the door seals.
Automatic machines of pre-styling versions are considered not to be killed.
The BMW 7 Series e38 is not for everyone. A copy in good condition will present many pleasant moments. Durability is rated quite high. However, to maintain good condition requires large financial costs. Most preferred are 8-cylinder gasoline engines with a displacement of 3.5, 4.0 and 4.4 liters.
